Signalling about 1/3 Installed

Here's a short video showing the installation of signalling to this point.  There is just one eight foot section left to scenic in this room although there is still tons to do as far as adding trees, static grass, ballast, etc.  I will probably continue with the basic scenery and track painting on the rest of the layout so that I can get all the signalling installed.  Then I plan to do a lot of work on my rolling stock.  More on that later.  I will go back eventually and try to complete each section of the layout like I did with the Rock River crossing.  Should be fun!!!!

  1. What's with the Norfolk Southern units in the staging yard? Do they run trains near there?

  2. The Norfolk Southern units bring trains from the east into the Proviso Yard, are cut off the train and UP units take the trains across the sub. Likewise, trains arriving from the west at Proviso are handed off to NS units to continue their trip east.

  3. Hey Daryl,

Looking good, as always. I was just wondering how you paint your track? Do you airbrush, or do it by hand? Like you, I am building my N scale turnouts and using individual ties, and I like to paint the ties before installing the turnout. I notice you have a few turnouts that are showing unpainted ties...

  4. I use an airbrush. I use rust color first that I apply to the sides of the rail. I then use railroad tie brown that I apply from the top to get the ties and also some overspray onto the rail sides.

  5. Daryl,

Is your grade crossing operational (ie. gates & lights activated by block detection), or just scenic? I'm thinking about adding operational gates on my Rochelle Intermodal, but have to think about allowing for double-track, bi-directional detection.

  6. Just scenic for now. I may animate the lights which would be fairly straight forward. Animating the gates, now thats a different story. I would like to see a step by step from someone who has successfully done that in N scale.
